Since 2018, vitamin C is no longer required on US Nutrition Facts labels. If your agave jar doesn't list it, the safest assumption is that the product contains very little or none — treat it as 0 mg per 100 g.

The Math Behind It

The calculator works in two steps. First it converts your serving to grams using these approximations based on an agave syrup density of 1.43 g/mL: 1 teaspoon ≈ 7.0 g, 1 tablespoon ≈ 21.1 g, 1 fluid ounce ≈ 42.3 g, 1 cup ≈ 338 g.

Then it applies the simple proportion:

Vitamin C (mg) = serving weight (g) ÷ 100 × vitamin C per 100 g

For example, a 21 g serving of syrup that has 17 mg of vitamin C per 100 g provides 21 ÷ 100 × 17 = 3.6 mg. The Daily Value result uses the FDA's reference amount of 90 mg of vitamin C for adults on a 2,000-calorie diet, so the percentage is just (mg ÷ 90) × 100. Worked Examples

Example 1 — 1 tablespoon of raw agave. Serving weight ≈ 21.1 g. With 17 mg per 100 g: 21.1 ÷ 100 × 17 = 3.6 mg, which is about 4% of your daily vitamin C.

Example 2 — 100 g of commercial agave syrup. At 0 mg per 100 g, the result is 0 mg — the entire serving contributes nothing to your vitamin C intake.

Example 3 — a full cup of raw agave. 338 g ÷ 100 × 17 = 57.5 mg, or 64% of the 90 mg Daily Value. Even an entire cup of the most vitamin-rich agave delivers less than what a medium orange typically provides.

What Actually Affects Vitamin C in Agave

Vitamin C is heat-sensitive, so how the syrup is made matters enormously. Raw agave is processed at low temperatures, which preserves more of the plant's natural ascorbic acid. Amber and dark agave syrups are cooked longer and at higher temperatures, so their vitamin C drops toward zero. Commercial syrups also tend to be heavily filtered, and the USDA database lists essentially no vitamin C for standard products.

Do not use agave syrup as a vitamin C supplement. Even in the best case it is a minor contributor; whole fruits and vegetables provide far more vitamin C per calorie. Is agave syrup a good source of vitamin C? No. Even the most generous estimate puts raw agave at roughly 17 mg per 100 g, and a typical tablespoon serving works out to only 3–4 mg — a few percent of your daily need. Commercial syrups typically contain none.
