How to Use This Calculator

Start by entering your serving size. The default is a standard 1.5 US fluid ounce shot, but you can select millilitres or centilitres instead. Next, set the ABV of your vodka. Most vodkas are bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), but European vodkas are often 37.5%, and barrel-proof or overproof vodkas can reach 50% or higher. The preset buttons fill in common values. When you click Calculate, the tool converts your serving to millilitres, estimates the pure alcohol content, and works out the calories from alcohol.

Use the results together with the rest of your day’s food log. For example, if you are tracking macros in an app, you can enter 0 g fat, 0 g carbs, and 0 g protein for the vodka, and add the alcohol calories separately as an “alcohol” or “other” line. Why Vodka Has Zero Fat

Vodka starts as a fermented mash of grains, potatoes, or other starch-rich plants. Fermentation converts sugars into ethanol, but the mash still contains small amounts of fat, protein, and fibre. Vodka is then distilled — usually multiple times — and the alcohol vapour is separated from the liquid. Fat and protein have higher boiling points than ethanol and water, so they stay behind in the still. What ends up in the bottle is almost entirely ethanol and water, with trace amounts of flavour compounds.

As a result, the USDA nutrient database lists plain vodka as containing 0 g of fat, 0 g of carbohydrate, and 0 g of protein per 100 g. This is true for every ABV from 30% to 50%+; changing the proof changes the alcohol and calorie content, not the macronutrient profile.

One note: cream-based “vodka” liqueurs, such as coffee-and-cream or whipped-cream flavoured products, are not pure vodka. They can contain dairy fat and sugar. This calculator is meant for clear, distilled vodka and flavoured vodkas without added cream.

Worked Example: One Standard US Shot

Input: 1.5 fl oz of 40% ABV vodka.

Step 1: Convert to millilitres: 1.5 × 29.5735 = 44.4 ml.

Step 2: Find ethanol volume: 44.4 × 0.40 = 17.7 ml.

Step 3: Convert ethanol volume to grams: 17.7 × 0.789 = 14.0 g.

Step 4: Multiply by 7 kcal/g: 14.0 × 7 ≈ 98 kcal.

Result: Fat = 0 g; carbs = 0 g; protein = 0 g; alcohol calories ≈ 98 kcal; standard drinks ≈ 1.0 (14 g ethanol).

If you use 100-proof vodka (50% ABV), the same 1.5 oz pour contains about 17.5 g of alcohol and 123 kcal. The fat remains 0 g.

Tips for Accurate Nutrition Tracking

  • Use a jigger or measuring cup. Free-pouring can easily add 25–50% more alcohol — and calories — than you think.
  • Track mixers separately. Tonic water, juice, soda, and syrups add sugar and calories that vodka itself does not provide.
  • Remember that 0 g carbs does not mean 0 calories. Alcohol contributes about 7 kcal per gram, almost as much as fat (9 kcal/g).
  • Check the label on flavoured vodkas. Some contain added sugar; a few grams of carbs per serving is common, though fat normally stays at 0 g.
  • Spread your intake across the week. Your body prioritises metabolising alcohol, which can temporarily slow fat oxidation.

Limitations & Precision Notes

This calculator uses the physical constants for pure ethanol. Real-world calorie values can differ slightly because commercial vodka contains water, traces of congeners, and sometimes flavourings. Nutrition labels round calories to the nearest 5 or 10, so a label may show 100 kcal where the mathematical value is 98 kcal.

For individuals with diabetes or other metabolic conditions, alcohol can affect blood glucose and medication. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
