This calculator converts a bouldering session into an equivalent walking-step count, based on the energy your body spent on the wall. To get a useful estimate, enter four things:

  • Session length — the active time you spent climbing. If you racked up 60 minutes at the gym but rested heavily between attempts, entering 40–45 minutes will give a more honest net estimate.
  • Bouldering intensity — choose Easy/technical, Moderate, or Intense/project. The calculator assigns a MET value of 4.5, 6.0, or 8.0 respectively. Projecting hard on steep overhangs costs more energy than rehearsing a slab sequence.
  • Body weight and height — weight drives the calorie estimate; height is used to estimate your walking stride length and cadence, which refines the step conversion.
  • Walking pace — a leisurely 2 mph stroll, a 3 mph moderate walk, or a brisk 3.5 mph walk. Faster walking burns more per step, so the step equivalent drops slightly as pace increases.

The Math Behind the Conversion

Both sides of the comparison start with METs, or metabolic equivalents. One MET is roughly your resting metabolic rate: about 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. An activity with a MET of 6.0 therefore burns about 6 kcal per kilogram per hour. The standard energy formula is:

Calories = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours)

For bouldering, we use this formula to find how many calories the climbing session cost. Next, we estimate how many walking calories one step represents. The walking MET is known from your chosen pace, and your cadence is derived from your height:

  • Step length (m) = height (cm) × 0.43 ÷ 100
  • Walking speed (m/min) = speed (mph) × 26.8224
  • Cadence (steps/min) = walking speed ÷ step length
  • Calories per step = walking MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 ÷ cadence

The final step count is simply the bouldering calories divided by the calories per step. Notice that body weight appears in both calculations, which is why a heavier climber needs more steps to burn the same session’s calories when walking at the same pace — exactly what you would expect. Worked Examples

Example 1: Moderate 45-minute session. A 70 kg climber spends 45 minutes bouldering at MET 6.0. Calories = 6.0 × 70 × 0.75 = 315 kcal. With a height of 175 cm, step length is 0.7525 m. Choosing a brisk 3.5 mph walk (MET 4.3), walking speed is 93.9 m/min, so cadence is about 125 steps/min. Calories per step = 4.3 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 ÷ 125 ≈ 0.042 kcal. Steps = 315 ÷ 0.042 ≈ 7,500. That is roughly 3.5 miles, or about 60 minutes of walking.

Example 2: Longer social session. An 85 kg climber spends 90 minutes on easier problems at MET 4.5. Calories = 4.5 × 85 × 1.5 ≈ 574 kcal. For a 165 cm person, step length is 0.7095 m. A moderate 3 mph walk (MET 3.5) gives a cadence of about 113 steps/min. Calories per step ≈ 3.5 × 3.5 × 85 ÷ 200 ÷ 113 ≈ 0.046 kcal. Steps ≈ 574 ÷ 0.046 ≈ 12,500 — a distance of about 5.5 miles and a walking time of roughly 110 minutes.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

The step equivalent is an estimate, not a precise measurement. Real-world bouldering involves rests, route changes, failed attempts, and variable body mechanics — all of which change energy cost. The calculator also assumes a steady walking cadence based on height; in practice, stride length varies with fitness, terrain, footwear, and habit.

Interpret the results as a helpful comparison rather than a medical or training prescription. If you are using a fitness tracker, you may find that your recorded step count at the same walking pace differs because trackers often infer steps from wrist motion, not stride length. The value here is the energy-equivalence perspective: a hard bouldering session can be surprisingly close to a long walk.
